Swerve N Curve #12 Wrap-up

Just wanted to say thanks so much to everyone who came out for the 12th edition of our famous SWERVE 'N' CURVE SCOOTER RALLY. It is now the longest-running rally still going on in all of SoCal. Over 120 scooters cruised out for this rally, making it our best turnout in years.

WRAP-UP:

We met Friday night at the Palos Verdes Bowl, a cool bowling alley that has been around since 1958. The bar/lounge area made for a perfect old school location for the traditional rally Meet 'N' Greet.

Big thanks to Mary Ann and Babette for selling our rally packs at the Bowl. Much appreciated, girls!

Then, we went for a quick, but cool night ride. We stopped just after passing La Venta Inn, in order to get a great view of the L.A. basin at night. You can see from Ventura all the way to the Inland Empire from up there, and the lights make it that much better.

We ended the night ride at one of our favorite watering holes, a place we've been going to as a club for years, Hennessey's Tavern in Redondo Beach. After some good suds 'n' grub, we all headed home to get ready for the next day's big ride.

Saturday morning, we all headed to the day ride meet spot which was The Shellback Tavern, a pub that was right in front of the Manhattan Beach Pier, in Manhattan Beach. This is the ride that everyone and their mom seemed to come out to, as we reached, and some say far surpassed, the century mark, in terms of number of attending scooters. It was amazing!

When we took off from Manhattan Beach, we headed south through the South Bay beach cities, hitting Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and up and into Palos Verdes for the famous Swerve N Curve route. Plus, we actually picked up even more scooters and riders along the way who were waiting for us, and who just joined in on the spur of the moment!! As for the ride, we mixed it up a bit this year, as we dipped into San Pedro and hung out at the Korean Friendship Bell for some time.

After the break in San Pedro, we doubled back a bit and came back to ride the "switchback," better know as PV Drive East. This is a nice steep road, with lots of twisties, that skirts along the east side of the Palos Verdes peninsula. It's got great views of the L.A. Harbor, if you slow down long enough to view them, and can afford to do so on such a twisty road.

After heading down the hill and into Torrance, we headed for Alpine Village, home of "Oktoberfest" and great imported beers on tap and good food. Once there, we had a scooter show and contest. Judging took place and awards were given. Congrats to Rich Sihilling for winning the "Best Vintage Scooter" award with his chrome, black and pink-flamed vintage Vespa Rally. Congrats, also, to Bret Ingraham for winning the "Best Modern Scooter" award with his custom and Malossi equipped modern Vespa LX150. Thanks again, to Mary Ann and Renee, for practically selling all of the remaining rally packs for us - you guys were awesome. Gracias also goes out to all of our traffic blockers - the ride could not have gone as smoothly as it did without you!!

Saturday's day ride ended up taking so much out of everyone, that not as many people showed up for the Saturday night ride. Still we had a good group that again met at the PV Bowl in Torrance, then rode to Ashley's Bar in Long Beach. Special thanks goes out to Jesse Trejo and the Long Beach Sound Society for hosting a cool Saturday night event to end the rally on a good note.

FRIDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 19:

7PM: “Meet ‘N’ Greet” at the PALOS VERDES BOWL, 24600 Crenshaw Blvd., Torrance, CA 90505, (310) 326-5120. Early comers can get the first crack at getting rally packs here. We'll be in the bar/lounge area if not outside.

8PM: Leave for the Night time Beach Ride in the South Bay.

9PM: End the ride at Hennessey’s Tavern Redondo Beach, 1712 S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach, CA, (310) 540-8443.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 20:

11AM: Meet at the SHELLBACK TAVERN (@ the Manhattan Beach Pier), 116 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 (park in the free motorcycle parking area in front of the tavern)**.

**Those who need to unload off of trailers or trucks can park them in the Target parking lot, located east of the pier, at the intersection of Manhattan Beach Blvd and N. Sepulveda Blvd. After unloading your scooters, you'll just have to ride west on Manhattan Beach Blvd until you get to the pier.

Be sure to get your RIDE MAP for the day's ride, which will be handed out here. Rally packs will not be available here but will be at the end of the ride (see below).

12noon: Ride leaves for the famous South Bay Swerve 'N' Curve route around Palos Verdes.

2/3PM: Ride will end at the world-famous ALPINE VILLAGE INN, "home of Oktoberfest," 833 Torrance Blvd., Torrance, CA 90502, (310) 327-4384. Park your scooters along the north side of the restaurant, on the bricks. SCOOTER SHOW & Judging to take place upon arrival; Trophies for "BEST VINTAGE" & "BEST MODERN" Scooters will be awarded within the first hour. Rally packs will be available. Enjoy some mod/ska/scooter tunes while you're sampling Alpine Village's great assortment of German, Belgian and craft beers on tap.

SATURDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 20:

2010 New Year's Ride

This past Saturday, January 2, 2010, was our 8th Annual New Year's Beach Ride. We had an unexpectedly great turnout! Over 35 scooters came out to ring in the new year, scooter-style.

We met at Claim Jumper restaurant, in Torrance, around 12:30pm. All sorts of different scooters were there, so it could have been called the "misfits toys" run. Unlike other scooter clubs in SoCal, we relish in the seeing different types of scooters, seeing what they are capable of and seeing how different they are to our own vintage, Italian scooters.

Knowledge is always power, so if finding out something you didn't know or expect from a different scooter model enhances your own scooter or experience, then we are happy to become the most powerful scooter club in SoCal, lol (for all you hyper-sensitive readers out there, this was a joke, ergo the "lol" at the end of that previous statement...). Anyways, real riders ride, they don't bitch and complain, so you will get the gist of what I am saying. To me, vintage scooters are the best, but that doesn't mean because you worship vintage you decry everything modern and throw it out the window. Heck, you'd never have hydraulic brakes on that old Italian scooter if you did that!! I just prefer to continue keeping an open mind to what new technology modern scooters can show us...

Ok, back down off my soapbox and back to the New Year's Ride. As I was saying, we had all sorts of two-wheeled vehicles show up. One of the most interesting was this old Puch moped:

Also, old SBSC member Jeff York (now the chief mechanic at Triumph of South Bay), and his friend Kent, rode over on these two 2009 Royal Enfields:

Jeff said they are both made in India these days, and joked that vintage Lambrettas are probably faster. He said the top speed was around 85mph, but they felt as if they were going to blow up at that speed. I assured him that some faster scooters feel like that at that speed, as well, if not tuned right or they are being pushed to their limit.

So, we finally got on the road a little after 1:15pm and headed straight up Crenshaw for our fuel stop. Then it was off to PV Drive North.

We then dropped into Redondo Beach and cruised the Esplanade right by the ocean. The perfect 75+ degree weather day, along with the clear blue skies, made the ocean view all the way up to Malibu look great! We then proceeded up through Hermosa Beach and into Manhattan Beach before turning left and dropping down into the parking lot at El Porto. We parked here for a while for a break and to soak in another sunny New Year's day in SoCal:

After the break, we doubled back south and to the Manhattan Beach Pier where we parked in front of the Shellback Tavern and walked across to "Beaches" restaurant. The downstairs bar was full, so we ended up having to go to the nice upstairs patio bar and restaurant area there at "Beaches". Kinda fancy! Here's a pic:

For some reason, they couldn't serve pitchers of beer up there in the fancy area, but could downstairs. Huh? Oh well. We all ordered our drinks and food and had a great time relaxing after the great ride.

2009 International Motorcycle Show

OK, so even though I had heard that this year's Cycle World International Motorcycle Show wasn't going to be that big, I still wanted to check it out. Especially since my 1957 Vespa Fenderlight was going to be shown in the "History of Motorcycles" exhibit.

But, I was unprepared to see just how much smaller it really seemed to be, in person. It was a lot smaller. I'd say 30-40% smaller! When I asked one of the organizers, upon entrance, why it was so much smaller, he said that the booth prices were relatively still the same, but that a lot of companies could not afford it this year, due to the economy and their financial situation...

Upon scanning the list of vendors, I quickly noticed that there didn't seem to be any specific scooter manufacturers on the list. Not even Piaggio! So, right away, I knew that one of the main reasons I came every year was now gone (namely to be able to see the new scoot models for the following year). So, instead, I turned my attention to both the Ducati booth, and the custom motorcycles section.

There were so many crazy looking customs, that you could tell had so much money seemingly wasted upon them, that I didn't know whether to be in awe, or laugh. A bunch had great custom-engineered solutions for braking, suspension, etc., though, so that was kind of neat. Standout of these was a "Shelby Cobra" super-custom motorcycle that was all lit up with custom onboard lighting, showcasing it's great custom faring work. That bike had easily over $100K into it, if not more... I'm sure Jay Leno was impressed, lol.

One of the standout bikes, for me, was the Mission Motors' Mission One Premier Limited Edition, all-electric, automatic Superbike, that debuted at this show (pictured above). A different, but aggressive looking motorcycle, the specs for this thing blew my mind. Obviously, it being all-electric was different to start off with. But when you started to hear about it's performance specs, it was crazy: 150mph top speed. A range of 150 miles per charge (which only takes under 2 hours to recharge at 240 volts). BUT, get this ---> at Zero RPM, this thing has 120 ft-lbs of torque! This means this sucker is ready to go as soon as you twist the throttle. Suffice to say, the rep from the company told me that the thing did 0-60mph in 3 SECONDS. !!!! Crazy. But, this kind of crazy also came with a crazy price tag: each one of these yet-to-be-built bikes costs $69,000. And, to get on their waiting list, or have a bike reserved for you, it will cost you $5,000. Wow. The bike sounds like crazy fun that tree-huggers would love to zip around on. But, it seems that they'll have to be tree-huggers with lots of green, if you'll pardon the pun... I have posted some pics from the show, at this link.

End note: They had a nice "History of Motorcycles" exhibit, of which my 1957 Vespa 125 Fenderlight was a part of. Mine and Rod Pick's scooter, a Lambretta, were the only scooters displayed, and it was a very nice experience to be included there. After seeing what else was there, I am very tempted to put my Rumi Formichino scooter project together to display there next year...! SBSC in a NY Times article!!

Well, two weeks and two different articles where the South Bay Scooter Club was mentioned in the month of October. The newest article came out in the October 22 printing of the famed New York Times!! It appeared on Page F12 of the Automobile section. An overall article about scootering, the South Bay SC had a quick mention, and some cool photos of the club were shown, to highlight the article, written by Dexter Ford. FYI - There was such a surge of interest in Swerve N Curve #10shirts and patches after the rally, that we have relaunched our online store to include a way to order the remaining SNC 10 t-shirts and very few patches left, as well as shirts and patches from past Swerve N Curve rallies. If you missed your chance to grab a shirt or patch at this last Swerve N Curve (or a past one), now you can. Shirt sizes and quantities for both are limited, though.

PV Concours D'Elegance this SUNDAY, 09/13/09

This weekend is, The Palos Verdes Concours d'Elegance. It is being held THIS SUNDAY, September 13th, at the Trump National Golf Club in Palos Verdes. They will be showcasing Italian vehicles, including pristine vintage Italian scooters, whose class will be judged by Gary and Kristian from Bar Italia. The Italian vehicles will obviously include all the famous ones like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alpha Romero, etc., even some Ducati's as motorcycles are included, too. So it should be a great lineup of excellent Italian vehicles, as well as some old standards from around the world. If anyone would like to go to this event on a scooter, you will be able to park in the showcase "corral" for a reduced price of $5. SBSC Nov Ride Destination = YUM!

This past Saturday, November 1st, the SBSC went on our usual monthly ride, which is every first Saturday of every month. We went for our usual ride through Palos Verdes, up the switchback road, then around the south side of PV and headed north until we hit Redondo Beach. At that point, we started cruising the beach cities, going north until we hit Hermosa Beach.

Once we hit Hermosa Beach, we cruised to our ride destination, which this month was Paciugo's Gelato Cafe, located at 1034 Hermosa Ave. I had received an e-mail from Brittny Tacker, the manager/co-owner of this Paciugo's location, inviting our club to stop in at the end of one of our rides, with the promise of a 20% discount. So, I decided to take her up on it and patronize a local South Bay small business. And, let me tell ya, everyone who came in was glad they did...

Upon walking into Paciugo's, you are struck by the great display area of the flavors of gelato offered that day. The display has open trays of Gelato, and the flavors are uniquely displayed inside of them. In a way, kind of like Cold Stone, only better, because you can openly see the different ingredients within the flavors. For example, the "Bubble Gum" flavor had actual pieces of pink bubble gum mixed in with the gelato, and the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough had HUGE pieces of chocolate chip cookie dough mixed into it (see pic below).

And, even though each flavor looked like it would add another three inches to your gut, we were surprised and relieved to hear from Brittny that most of their flavors have only 150 calories, with 3 to 6 grams of fat (50-70 percent lower than regular ice cream), while their sorbets have only about 100 calories with ZERO grams of fat. She said they can do this because they make their gelato with no cream, butter, trans fats and high fructose corn syrup. Nice!

Another nice feature is that with each size cup that you get, you have the option of choosing multiple flavors. The "Piccolo" (small) lets you pick up to 3 flavors; the "Medio" (medium) lets you pick up to 4 flavors; and the "Grande" (large) lets you pick up to 5 flavors. Most of us picked the "Medio". The hardest part was picking from the daily-made flavors they had. Every morning they make the day's new batch of flavors. And they have over 200 flavors that they can make! So, they decide what they are making for the next day late in the afternoon, and if you want to see what they'll have, they will post the new flavors menu on their location's web page that morning. Welcome to gelato in the information age, huh?

And, speaking of the information age, another nice amenity offered is free wi-fi service for all their customers.

Not to be overlooked, also, is their full espresso bar for all the coffee lovers out there.

All I know is that I was in heaven with the flavors I picked for my "Medio" cup: Tiramisu, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Cookies 'N' Milk. WOW! One flavor I did notice, that I didn't even want to sample, was one called "Black Pepper Olive Oil"... Huh??? Brittny said it was a popular flavor. I just had to take her word on it, lol.

I know this sounds like one big commercial for Paciugo's - but it was just THAT GOOD! I seriously challenge anyone to find a better tasting gelato in the South Bay. Everyone should go check this place out, and, with the low calorie count in their flavors, you'll feel a little less guilty about doing it...

And, to top off the good ride and the great gelato that day, I walked across the street and over to Hennessey's at the Hermosa Beach Pier to wash it all down with a nice tall Guinness. Ahhhhhh!

First off, I just wanna say thanks to all who came out to the South Bay SC's monthly ride this past Saturday. Great turnout and a nice long ride, before cruising over to our end of ride destination, Del Amo Motorsports.

I also wanted to say thanks to Del Amo Motorsports for setting up the free food, facility tour and electric scooter demo at their store in Redondo Beach. Special thanks goes to Zane Steele for the hospitality, and Brian Brugh for showing us a good time, feeding us (!) and taking us on the demo rides.

OK, now for the demo part. Let me just say, that I was very impressed with the Vectix scooter's performance - so much so, that it really did blow me away. At first I thought, "ok, how good could an all-electric scooter's performance really be?" Answer: Very good. Very, very good.

When Brian first ran through the operating instructions, it seemed like something out of Star Trek (yes, I'm a nerd - hey, I like scooters and Godzilla movies, too, so there's your proof). After hitting a button and one of the levers, the electronic dashboard and instrument cluster comes to life and all the lights turn on. On the far right, you could see how much "charge" you had left in the energy gauge. On the far left, you could see the word "GO", which meant it was actually on and you could go. Sounds silly, but this was very helpful because, since it is electric, there was no sound to indicate the scooter was actually running! The left instrument panel also displayed a cool things like estimated range (estimating how many miles you had left on the charge based on how you were driving; cool thing was, you could see your miles go up while driving if you used the "regen" throttle - more about this later), bluetooth indicator, and an odometer with a trip A or B setting. The center panel was the kmph, with a mph on the inside ring, along with the overall odomoeter.

So, when we first started test driving the Vectrix in the parking lot, to get a feel for them, the torque surprised me. Right off the first pull of the throttle, it had some nice torque to it. No lag as in previous electric scooters I had tried. Then, as we started maneuvering around the lot, it was obvious that the scooter was well designed for long distance, comfortable travel.

After a few laps around the parking lot, Brian, on a gas powered street motorcycle, said it was time to take the scoots for a street test ride. He gave us some ride instructions, let us know the route we were going to go, then led us onto Marine Avenue. As we turned right onto both Inglewood Avenue and Manhattan Beach Blvd., we could tell there was some good power lurking underneath. But, we didn't realize it until we took off on a straightaway down Manhattan Beach Blvd. Brian said to punch it, and we did, and we had to all hold on! The Vectix lurched forward and just took off as if by it's own. And it maintained the power and kept going faster, if you can believe it. I looked down at the speedometer and was amazed at how fast we had gotten up to in so short a period of time. Needless to say, we were all smiles at the next stoplight, shaking our heads.

One of the cool features of the scooter was the "regen" throttle, which featured "regenerative braking." You rolled the throttle downward, as usual, to accelerate the scooter. But, once you released the throttle to the neutral position, you could move it forward to engage a braking system that actually helps generate added electricity for your scooters charge. And you could feel the scooter start to brake and slow down the more you moved the throttle forward. And, it also produced one of the few sounds the scooter makes --- a slight humming noise, like a soft gear catching slowly. When you used this feature, you could actually see the estimated range of the scooter go up in the estimated range gauge, too. You could also use the traditional front and rear brake levers if you so choose to do so.

So, once more on the road, we all started testing the scooter's capabilities, and we really freaked out on the performance. Being a vintage scooter enthusiast, I always thought the power of a highly-tuned two-stroke engine was unmatched in the scooter world, but I was wrong. After driving the Vectrix, I can honestly say that off the line, it could give any kitted gas-powered scooter a ride for the money... Towards the end of our test drive, we came up upon a guy riding a Honda Helix scooter (the big one). We all surrounded him, and he took off at the light. We caught him and smoked him within three to five seconds. Dude just shook his head as he caught up to us at the next light and turned the opposite way. It was funny.

We got back to Del Amo Motorsports all in one piece, and were all raving about the scooter's performance. We agreed it wasn't the best looking scooter, but the performance and the fact that you would never again have to worry about (or pay for) gas or oil, made it a very attractive scooter after all. Brian had broken it down for us: it took two hours to charge the scooter, or 35 cents worth of electricity. Divide that by the driving range of the scooter, and it ends up costing you 1 cent per mile to drive the damn thing... Couple that with the performance and you get a big fat "WOW".

SWERVE N CURVE 9 WRAP

Well, it came and went --- SWERVE N CURVE #9. And, it was better than ever!

The Friday night ride turned out to be a sweet, long, mini Swerve N Curve route, lead by All Day South Bay Doug. Everyone met at Killkenny's on the Redondo Beach Pier beforehand and Doug ended the ride at Hennessey's in Riviera Village afterwards.

And the South Bay's famous Swerve N Curve route on Saturday, often imitated or outright copied but NEVER done as well, was a blast once more, 80+ scooters strong, ending at the fun venue, Paddy-O's in Torrance. DeeJay-ed tunes were provided by "ON TARGET" DJ's, and a scooter buffet was set up for all the hungry riders.

"Swerve N Ska" on Saturday nite was happening, and Sunday's ride, led by Tank Top and others to Keegan's in Torrance, was a great capper to another SoCal classic rally, which was a huge success.

Shout outs to all who helped, especially Doug Ewer, Richard & Robin Wondra, Brian & Veronica Schade, Ken Salmacia, Marv Mack, Jesse "On Target" Trejo, Rich Stamper and others in both the South Bay and Westside scooter clubs.

Hawthorne Italfest Wrap-Up!

Just wanted to throw out a quick “thank you” to all who came out and participated at the South Bay Scooter Club’s space at the City of Hawthorne’s 2nd Annual Italian Festival this past Saturday, June 14th! We had a fun time! “Uncle Frank” from the Jimmy Kimmel Show came by and hung out with some of us, as you can see by the picture shown.

South Bay SC member, Anthony Sepe, beat out 18 other would-be challengers (including another fellow-scooterist) to win the Festival’s Spaghetti Eating Contest! He won $100 and a commemorative, engraved award plate from the contest’s sponsor, Il Fornaio restaurant. To see a video of Anthony’s wining performance, click here.

Another scooterist, Tony from Newport Beach, won one of the raffle prizes which was an onscreen role in the upcoming Tom Hanks movie, "Angels & Demons", which is a follow-up to "The DaVinci Code." Tony will be portraying a Roman-Catholic Cardinal in the movie. Good going, Tony!!

There was a surprisingly good set of entertainers who showed up to entertain the crowds. We got one of them on video. Crooner, Joey Gian, sang a couple of songs from the movie called "Return To Me", which he did a few songs for the soundtrack and was actually in the film as a charity ball big band singer. Last, but not least, the food from all the Italian food vendors was amazing! Combined with the Peroni Italian Beer being served in the Beer Garden, life was good for all us scooterists at the Italian Festival this past Saturday! For a few pics, click here.

South Bay recent rides

So a bunch of us have gone on a bunch of recent rides hosted by other clubs. As you all know, we take pride in having ridden with every club in the LA/OC area, and we continue to support everyone else's rallys and special events when we can...

Last few rides have been great, in terms of great riding and twistys. The first was the PhonIEs Mt. Baldy ride. Very challenging and a good time with one of our favorite SoCal clubs leading the ride. Here is a preview pic:

Next was the Stingers' Oak Glenn Apple Ride. Another fun ride in the IE that went up into the mountains, this time east of Riverside. Oak Glenn is one of those mountain communities that has a little niche with it's Apple orchards, where at the local shops you can get homemade fresh Apple Cider, Apple pies, Apple jam, etc., etc. Good times! Then, on Nov 11th, a group of riders, hoping to re-spark interest in the Pasadena area (left vacant by the disbanding of the Vespa Club Pasadena), organized a ride. We cruised up to wish them the best on starting the rides up again. Pics to follow!

Lots of rides have been going on lately and there are pics to check out, if you haven’t already:

Last weekend was the annual PhonIEs’ Halloween Scooter Rally. Sunday had a long scooter ride up to Mt. Baldy, filled with tons of twistys for 60+ miles – endurance was one word you could use, but the best one was fun. Check out the pics - click here

The week before that was the Vespa Club of Los Angeles’ 1st Annual Disneyland Ride. More good times! And, for the pics, click here. If you didn’t go, you missed a greatly decorated-for-Halloween Disneyland, especially the Haunted Mansion, which was completely re-done inside and out with a “Nightmare Before Christmas” Theme.

But, here is a quick rundown:

This Saturday, November 4th is our regular monthly South Bay SC ride. Come on out for a local ride, ending up at either UTRO’s or PADDIE-O’s, two of our favorite, South Bay, scooter-friendly pubs!!

The following weekend I’d encourage you to go out to the Oak Glenn Apple Ride in Riverside on November 11th. We meet up at the Royal Falconer, located on Main St. in good ole Riverside, and leave at 11:00am sharp, ride up to the apple orchards for some cider, grub and fun; should be a total of 80 miles round trip. Come join us if you can!!!

Saturday, December 2nd, is our December South Bay ride. Stay tuned for a surprise destination!! Just make sure to mark it in your calendars...

Also, we will be doing our Annual South Bay SC “Naughty Butt Nice” X-Mas Lights Ride & Party sometime in December; stay tuned for the date.

And, we will be riding with the Vespa Club of Los Angeles for a special charity event in December:

On December 16th, the Vespa Club of LA has invited all scooterists to a TOYS FOR TOTS RIDE, benefiting the kids at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Here are the particulars: Meet at 12noon at the Starbucks at the intersection of Culver & Washington, in downtown Culver City. Ride leaves at 12:30pm. For this ride, the South Bay will be meeting at Claim Jumper in Torrance at 10:30am, leaving at 11:00am for Culver City.

Hello everyone, this is an informative update about the Honolulu shindig on October 13th-15th, with contact numbers, prices & etc.

First, we will have a diverse line up of bands to accommodate each & every enthusiast; The Templars (NYC), Power Chords (SD), Extra Stout (HI), + serveral other local hawaiian mod + indie style bands, Soul + Reggae DJs Phil Templar, Frank Popp & Shing-A Ling & more TBA.

The designated hotel is the "Hawaii Polo Inn". As of today, it will be $89/night for 2 people (1 room + 2 beds) but it can accomodate more than 4+ people in there. It will cost $20 more for each addition person, if you mention. Anyway, their number is (808)949-0061.

The dates are the 13th-15th of October & it would be cheapest to fly be there from the 12th-16th of October. We just booked 13 flights & it cost $339 round trip from LAX. Starting it off, don’t forget that this Saturday is the South Bay Monthly Ride, the longest running regular ride in all of Southern California. Last Sunday’s Scooter Shop Swap Meet was pretty big – looked like the biggest turnout ever for one of those. Saw some bikes being sold and dealt, along with lots of scooter parts, so that was all good. You all got to see my busted up Rally 200 (yeah, that was the one from my accident) sitting in front of the shop as well. Mic is going to start restoring it for me in March with my insurance money, so that should be good... Hope everyone got what they wanted at the Swap Meet, and if not, at least the food from the BBQ was damn good (how about that pulled pork? YUM!).

Well, I finally got my room for the upcoming Las Vegas Rally last week. Now all I need is some way to get my scooter there. And, I’m not the only one who needs transpo for their scoot. There are a couple other folks I know who are lookin’ as well. SO, if you’ve got some extra room in your truck, or trailer, and would be willing to help some of us out, please let me know. I’m sure some extra gas money from one of us could definitely help out and make a win-win for everyone. I’d appreciate it, as I’m sure some other folks would, too, so that we could ride our scoots out in Vegas as well. Thanks a lot!!

And, there are some new details concerning the all-LA Scooter Rally, LOS ANGELES WINTER SCOOT 2006, happening the weekend after Las Vegas. Big news is that Scooterists can get in to the Saturday show for $15 presale or DOS (normally $20 presale, $25 DOS). With the Saturday event entry, you will also be able to attend the sunday night DJ event for free. You MUST be on the list to get this price. FEB 16 - THURSDAY

7PM HAUFBRAUHAUS DINNER RIDE
Ride in a group for food and a show. Leave the Gold Spike at 7pm and ride to the Munich Style Beer Garden The Hofbrauhuas ( http://www.hofbrauhauslasvegas.com/ - 4510 Paradise Road across from the Hard Rock). Eat some fine Bavarian food and drink traditional beers at the outside beer garden where the seating capacity is over 400 people. After food and drink, we will head to a pub for more drinks and music.

9PM SUBCULT MIXER
Ride over to Famous John’s (252 Convention Center Drive) for some a mixture of various subculture music. Live bands TBA (Cost: FREE). Giveaways at door and during show.

FEB 17 - FRIDAY

11am: GOODSPINGS RIDE AND RACE
We are going to do it again, the rain did not stop us last year!! This is a 30mi(60mi r/t) non-highway ride to the Pioneer Saloon built in 1913 in Goodsprings, NV. Group ride begins from the Gold Spike and goes to Jean, NV (22mi) on Las Vegas Blvd. There will be a gas stop in Jean. From Jean to Goodsprings, NV is a straight road with a slight uphill grade for 7mi with a posted speed of 55mph with no stops and little traffic. Once at the bar, the first one to the top of the hill wins the trophy. Then relax at the Pioneer with some Free Beer from Heat Seized SC. Because of the distance and speeds the club will also provide a support vehicle to pick up any breakdowns. Plan to be back at the Spike by 4:00pm or earlier. There is limited food served at the Pioneer Saloon. See map in the events booklet for more details.

11AM: NOHO SCOOTERS POKER TOURNAMENT
NoHo Scooters presents the second annual Scooterist Poker Game at Binions Casino (128 E Fremont St) in Downtown Las Vegas. RSVPs are recommended, but not required. The casino needs an estimate of how many people are going to play. Sign up HERE (http://vegasrally.poker-signup.com) In order to keep the game friendly, this will be a low limit ($2/$4 or $4/$8) Texas Hold Em game. Binions is a short walk from the Gold Spike. The poker room is located at the rear of the casino. You can also enter the rear on Ogden St, which puts you right in the poker room. Those who want to call the day of the event for availability, please call Mike at 310-415-7042. Also note, Mike is getting married at 6PM this very night!

3pm: HAPPY HOUR

Ground Zero meet at the Klondike Inn & Casino (5195 S. Las Vegas Blvd.) south end of the strip next to the old "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign. Grab some food and Ride at 8PM - Ready steady go! Las Vegas strip ride up and down the strip, then ending at the Cheyenne Ballroom in the Frontier Hotel (3120 S. Las Vegas Blvd.) Ride led by Heat Seized SC

10pm-5am: VEGAS SHAKEDOWN
All-Nighter at the Cheyenne Ballroom in the New Frontier Casino (3120 S. Las Vegas Blvd.). An all night dance with some of the best DJs from America and Britain spinning Brit Pop, Northern Soul and Skinhead Ska . Sponsored by the Boston Stranglers and will be FREE this year. There will be dedicated secure scooter parking behind casino. Rally packs and swag will be sold here.

1AM: SAFE RIDE
For those that need to get their scooters back safely to old downtown. Leave from Frontier Casino parking lot ride back to old Vegas for old school drinks, food, ladies, and good ole fashioned gambling see glitter gulch at it's finest! Fremont Street Experience (000-400 blocks of E. Fremont St).

FEB 18 - SATURDAY

10am-2pm: SCOOTER SHOW
Shine and show your scooter, meet others, and get to watch the judging for this year's scooter awards at Famous John's (252 Convention Center Drive). Have an early brunch and mingle (Cost: FREE). Vendors will have their wares for sale and get your official rally gear. Scooters judging will begin at 12 noon and end 1pm. FIRST OF TWO-PART RAFFLE TAKES PLACE AT 1:30. RAFFLE TICKETS GOOD ALL WEEKEND.. The 2PM Ride leave from here. See map in the events booklet for more details.

2pm: THE LARGEST SCOOTER RIDE IN AMERICA!
Leaving from Famous John's, group ride will go to Hoover Dam via the back way around scenic Lake Meade (3.00 fee). For those who don't want to go to the dam a group will break off and head to the Back Stop in Boulder City. Everyone else will head for the dam. Upon leaving the dam, scooterists will meet back up with the rest of the group at the bar and head back to the Las Vegas at 4PM as a group. Led by Heat Seized SC and support vehicle run by ClaussStudios.com. See map in the events booklet for more details.

5pm: RETURN
back to lost wages, take some time to check out the sites and have some dinner on your own.

12 NOON: FAMOUS RED ROCK RIDE
Meet at Bonanza Gift Center (2460 S. Las Vegas Blvd. at Sahara) Leisure Ride and Red Rock Canyon - scoot through desert canyons and scenic parts of the outskirts of Las Vegas, then head to Red Rock Canyon (cost: 3.00). 3PM: LUNCH AND SCOOTER SHENANIGANS

Background: After trying to find information online to try to figure out my 1958 Rumi Formichino scooter (which won “Best Vintage Scooter” at Orange Crush 8, Birdie), I gave up!!! There was absolutely NO helpful info online, or practically anywhere else, for that matter. Luckily, I joined the Moto Rumi Club, based in England, which provided a ton of info about my little scooter. Now, to help out other Formichino owners, and for curious scooter enthusiasts, I have started constructing my “Little Rumi Formichino website” that will ultimately have quite a bit of info about the maintenance, parts, history etc., of this great scoot.

Also, word just in that AMERICAN SCOOTERIST MAGAZINE, official magazine of the Vespa Club of America, is coming out with a special Double ALL-VESPA GS issue. It will attempt to “provide an in depth exploration of the Vespa GS˜-the first production "sports" scooter in the world.” “The issue covers the full evolution of the GS from the early "Sports" and Sei Giorni models of the late 1940s and early 1950s to the last Moto Vespa GTi models with GS 160 engines in 1979.” The magazine comes as part of your membership to the Vespa Club of America. If you’re not a member, you should check it out and everything else the VCOA has to offer. The website is at: http://www.vespaclubusa.org

FEB 16 - THURSDAY

7PM HAUFBRAUHAUS DINNER RIDE
Ride in a group for food and a show. Leave the Gold Spike at 7pm and ride to the Munich Style Beer Garden The Hofbrauhuas ( http://www.hofbrauhauslasvegas.com/ - 4510 Paradise Road across from the Hard Rock). Eat some fine Bavarian food and drink traditional beers at the outside beer garden where the seating capacity is over 400 people. After food and drink, we will head to a pub for more drinks and music.

9PM SUBCULT MIXER
Ride over to Famous John’s (252 Convention Center Drive) for some a mixture of various subculture music. Live bands TBA (Cost: FREE). Giveaways at door and during show.

FEB 17 - FRIDAY

11am: GOODSPINGS RIDE AND RACE
We are going to do it again, the rain did not stop us last year!! This is a 30mi(60mi r/t) non-highway ride to the Pioneer Saloon built in 1913 in Goodsprings, NV. Group ride begins from the Gold Spike and goes to Jean, NV (22mi) on Las Vegas Blvd. There will be a gas stop in Jean. From Jean to Goodsprings, NV is a straight road with a slight uphill grade for 7mi with a posted speed of 55mph with no stops and little traffic. Once at the bar, the first one to the top of the hill wins the trophy. Then relax at the Pioneer with some Free Beer from Heat Seized SC. Because of the distance and speeds the club will also provide a support vehicle to pick up any breakdowns. Plan to be back at the Spike by 4:00pm or earlier. There is limited food served at the Pioneer Saloon. See map in the events booklet for more details.

11AM: NOHO SCOOTERS POKER TOURNAMENT
NoHo Scooters presents the second annual Scooterist Poker Game at Binions Casino (128 E Fremont St) in Downtown Las Vegas. RSVPs are recommended, but not required. The casino needs an estimate of how many people are going to play. Sign up HERE (http://vegasrally.poker-signup.com) In order to keep the game friendly, this will be a low limit ($2/$4 or $4/$8) Texas Hold Em game. Binions is a short walk from the Gold Spike. The poker room is located at the rear of the casino. You can also enter the rear on Ogden St, which puts you right in the poker room. Those who want to call the day of the event for availability, please call Mike at 310-415-7042. Also note, Mike is getting married at 6PM this very night!

3pm: HAPPY HOUR

7pm: MEET, GREET, EAT and RIDE
Ground Zero meet at the Klondike Inn & Casino (5195 S. Las Vegas Blvd.) south end of the strip next to the old "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign. Grab some food and Ride at 8PM - Ready steady go! Las Vegas strip ride up and down the strip, then ending at the Cheyenne Ballroom in the Frontier Hotel (3120 S. Las Vegas Blvd.) Ride led by Heat Seized SC

10pm-5am: VEGAS SHAKEDOWN
All-Nighter at the Cheyenne Ballroom in the New Frontier Casino (3120 S. Las Vegas Blvd.). An all night dance with some of the best DJs from America and Britain spinning Brit Pop, Northern Soul and Skinhead Ska . Sponsored by the Boston Stranglers and will be FREE this year. There will be dedicated secure scooter parking behind casino. Rally packs and swag will be sold here.

1AM: SAFE RIDE
For those that need to get their scooters back safely to old downtown. Leave from Frontier Casino parking lot ride back to old Vegas for old school drinks, food, ladies, and good ole fashioned gambling see glitter gulch at it's finest! Fremont Street Experience (000-400 blocks of E. Fremont St).

FEB 18 - SATURDAY

10am-2pm: SCOOTER SHOW
Shine and show your scooter, meet others, and get to watch the judging for this year's scooter awards at Famous John's (252 Convention Center Drive). Have an early brunch and mingle (Cost: FREE). Vendors will have their wares for sale and get your official rally gear. Scooters judging will begin at 12 noon and end 1pm. FIRST OF TWO-PART RAFFLE TAKES PLACE AT 1:30. RAFFLE TICKETS GOOD ALL WEEKEND.. The 2PM Ride leave from here. See map in the events booklet for more details.

2pm: THE LARGEST SCOOTER RIDE IN AMERICA!
Leaving from Famous John's, group ride will go to Hoover Dam via the back way around scenic Lake Meade (3.00 fee). For those who don't want to go to the dam a group will break off and head to the Back Stop in Boulder City. Everyone else will head for the dam. Upon leaving the dam, scooterists will meet back up with the rest of the group at the bar and head back to the Las Vegas at 4PM as a group. Led by Heat Seized SC and support vehicle run by ClaussStudios.com. See map in the events booklet for more details.

5pm: RETURN
back to lost wages, take some time to check out the sites and have some dinner on your own.
***Slots-o-fun (across from the Riviera) has a 99 cent food and beer menu!***

8pm-2am+: VEGAS SCOOT DO
At the Aruba Hotel (2535 S. Las Vegas Blvd.). Featuring 2 live bands and 8 DJ competing to get the dance floor packed (Cost: $15). Bands TBA.

FEB 19 - SUNDAY

12 NOON: FAMOUS RED ROCK RIDE
Meet at Bonanza Gift Center (2460 S. Las Vegas Blvd. at Sahara) Leisure Ride and Red Rock Canyon - scoot through desert canyons and scenic parts of the outskirts of Las Vegas, then head to Red Rock Canyon (cost: 3.00). Ride will be led by Heat Seized SC. See map in the events booklet for more details.

3PM: LUNCH AND SCOOTER SHENANIGANS
Meet back up at Skinny Duggans Pub (4127 W. Charleson Blvd.) for a BBQ (event cost: Free). BBQ lunch (Cost: $7.00) 3pm-4pm, full kitchen after 4pm. This DJed event includes Gymkana sponsored by WCLW, HUGE raffle sponsored by Scoot Quarterly, and both the Vegas Rally and the National Scooter Awards sponsored by Upstarts SC. Always a good time, this rally leaves from Bakersfield Saturday morning and goes up over the Green Hill Mountains, through the Angeles Forest, and down to the campground at beautiful Lake Isabela.

Make sure to bring all your best camping gear for the sometimes chilly, yet fun Saturday evening campout. Saturday evening BBQ and beer will be provided by the Unforgiven Scooter Club, as well as one of the funnest rally raffles you'll ever see. On Sunday morning the ride goes back along the winding Kern River for another great scenic ride back into Bakersfield.

Dust off your old, slow scooter and bring it on out for our 5th Annual SoCal Slow Ride.

This is for slow bikes ONLY. If your scooter can go over 50mph, or is less than 20 years old, it’s probably too fast! We will be doing speeds of 30-35mph tops, so this is a rally for the scooters who normally can"t keep up in regular rallies.

We will be meeting at 12noon at the Claim Jumper restaurant in Torrance, CA (at the intersection of Lomita and Crenshaw Blvd.s). Ride leaves promptly at 1pm.

Route will be the fabulous Swerve N Curve PV Peninsula full circle route. Afterwards, we will eat & drink in the Claim Jumper bar to our hearts' content.

Background: After trying to find information online to try to figure out my 1958 Rumi Formichino scooter (which won “Best Vintage Scooter” at Orange Crush 8, Birdie), I gave up!!! There was absolutely NO helpful info online, or practically anywhere else, for that matter. Luckily, I joined the Moto Rumi Club, based in England, which provided a ton of info about my little scooter. Now, to help out other Formichino owners, and for curious scooter enthusiasts, I have started constructing my “Little Rumi Formichino website” that will ultimately have quite a bit of info about the maintenance, parts, history etc., of this great scoot.

RE: American Scooterist, special all-GS double issue

AMERICAN SCOOTERIST, magazine of the Vespa Club of America, is coming out with a double ALL-GS special issue. This is taken from the e-mail sent by their editor. Plus, if you're not a member of the VCOA, you should look into it:

"Many members of our club are working very hard on a special issue of American Scooterist. Our intention is to bring material together that provides an in depth exploration of the Vespa GS˜-the first production "sports" scooter in the world. 2005 was, after all, the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the GS. We feel that it is important for the club to do our part to commemorate this historically-significant scooter.

The project of collecting, writing and printing all of the GS-related material turned out to be larger and more involved than we anticipated. The content for the magazine was so great that we did not want to leave much out. Due to the size of this issue, the officers of the club decided to turn this magazine into a special double issue. This issue will count towards two regular magazines in a year's membership. The magazine will be late for #48 but early for #49. We expect to have it printed later this week. I am confident that we are doing the right thing by our membership and that once you see the magazine, you'll agree. In terms of written material, it is the equivalent of two regular issues. The magazine is cram packed with fantastic stories and photos all related to the GS. The issue covers the full evolution of the GS from the early "Sports" and Sei Giorni models of the late 1940s and early 1950s to the last Moto Vespa GTi models with GS 160 engines in 1979.

For me it is pure Vespa heaven and it will be an issue that will remain by my desk for years to come. Look forward to a good read."

Hello, SoCal Scootheads -

Hope everyone is well. Lots of stuff coming up so be sure to check it out!

Quick reminder: our monthly South Bay Night Ride is coming up THIS Thursday, January 19th, 2006. Meet at the same bat time, same bat place... (see below)

Our last South Bay ride was lots of fun. We did our traditional New Year’s “Ride to the Beaches”, cruising through the South Bay beaches all the way to El Segundo, then turning back to the Manhattan Beach Pier for lunch at Shellback Tavern. Also, a new scooter & motorcycle tuning/repair shop opened up in SoCal a few weeks back. It is called FULLERTON VINTAGE and it is owned and operated by Chris Lawrence, formerly of Vintage Scooter Service. In honor of this new venture, there was a GRAND OPENING celebration on Saturday, January 7th. There were bands, food, and drinks and fun at the shop, which will cater to most two-wheeled vintage machines. To see some pics from the Grand Opening, click here.
Also, there was quite a turnout for the “Scrubs” TV Series scene on January 12th, in which they wanted a bunch of scooterists and their scoots to participate in a scene with Zach Braff (star of the show). It was a short, but funny, scene, and we all got paid for it(!). It was nice to see folks from virtually every club and different areas of SoCal participating together. They are going to inform as to when the episode will be airing, which I will then pass on to you via this newsletter. To see pics from the filming, click here.

ALSO, don’t forget the Scooter Shop Swap Meet & BBQ coming up soon, on Sunday, January 29th; should be another good time to buy and sell scooter junk, while hanging out and grinding on some good grub. See the details below, including info about vendor spaces...

FEB 16 - THURSDAY

7PM HAUFBRAUHAUS DINNER RIDE
Ride in a group for food and a show. Leave the Gold Spike at 7pm and ride to the Munich Style Beer Garden The Hofbrauhuas ( http://www.hofbrauhauslasvegas.com/ - 4510 Paradise Road across from the Hard Rock). Eat some fine Bavarian food and drink traditional beers at the outside beer garden where the seating capacity is over 400 people. After food and drink, we will head to a pub for more drinks and music.

9PM SUBCULT MIXER
Ride over to Famous John’s (252 Convention Center Drive) for some a mixture of various subculture music. Live bands TBA (Cost: FREE). Giveaways at door and during show.

FEB 17 - FRIDAY

11am: GOODSPINGS RIDE AND RACE
We are going to do it again, the rain did not stop us last year!! This is a 30mi(60mi r/t) non-highway ride to the Pioneer Saloon built in 1913 in Goodsprings, NV. Group ride begins from the Gold Spike and goes to Jean, NV (22mi) on Las Vegas Blvd. There will be a gas stop in Jean. From Jean to Goodsprings, NV is a straight road with a slight uphill grade for 7mi with a posted speed of 55mph with no stops and little traffic. Once at the bar, the first one to the top of the hill wins the trophy. Then relax at the Pioneer with some Free Beer from Heat Seized SC. Because of the distance and speeds the club will also provide a support vehicle to pick up any breakdowns. Plan to be back at the Spike by 4:00pm or earlier. There is limited food served at the Pioneer Saloon. See map in the events booklet for more details.

11AM: NOHO SCOOTERS POKER TOURNAMENT
NoHo Scooters presents the second annual Scooterist Poker Game at Binions Casino (128 E Fremont St) in Downtown Las Vegas. RSVPs are recommended, but not required. The casino needs an estimate of how many people are going to play. Sign up HERE (http://vegasrally.poker-signup.com) In order to keep the game friendly, this will be a low limit ($2/$4 or $4/$8) Texas Hold Em game. Binions is a short walk from the Gold Spike. The poker room is located at the rear of the casino. You can also enter the rear on Ogden St, which puts you right in the poker room. Those who want to call the day of the event for availability, please call Mike at 310-415-7042. Also note, Mike is getting married at 6PM this very night!

3pm: HAPPY HOUR

1AM: SAFE RIDE
For those that need to get their scooters back safely to old downtown. Leave from Frontier Casino parking lot ride back to old Vegas for old school drinks, food, ladies, and good ole fashioned gambling see glitter gulch at it's finest! Fremont Street Experience (000-400 blocks of E. Fremont St).

FEB 18 - SATURDAY

10am-2pm: SCOOTER SHOW
Shine and show your scooter, meet others, and get to watch the judging for this year's scooter awards at Famous John's (252 Convention Center Drive). Have an early brunch and mingle (Cost: FREE). Vendors will have their wares for sale and get your official rally gear. Scooters judging will begin at 12 noon and end 1pm. FIRST OF TWO-PART RAFFLE TAKES PLACE AT 1:30. RAFFLE TICKETS GOOD ALL WEEKEND.. The 2PM Ride leave from here. See map in the events booklet for more details.

2pm: THE LARGEST SCOOTER RIDE IN AMERICA!
Leaving from Famous John's, group ride will go to Hoover Dam via the back way around scenic Lake Meade (3.00 fee). For those who don't want to go to the dam a group will break off and head to the Back Stop in Boulder City. Everyone else will head for the dam. Upon leaving the dam, scooterists will meet back up with the rest of the group at the bar and head back to the Las Vegas at 4PM as a group. Led by Heat Seized SC and support vehicle run by ClaussStudios.com. See map in the events booklet for more details.

5pm: RETURN
back to lost wages, take some time to check out the sites and have some dinner on your own.

12 NOON: FAMOUS RED ROCK RIDE
Meet at Bonanza Gift Center (2460 S. Las Vegas Blvd. at Sahara) Leisure Ride and Red Rock Canyon - scoot through desert canyons and scenic parts of the outskirts of Las Vegas, then head to Red Rock Canyon (cost: 3.00). HAPPY 2006, EVERYONE! Hope everyone rang in the new year in a great way. This should be a great year for scooting so I’m looking forward to it. There’s already a lot of stuff lined up, so it’s looking good!

Please come out and enjoy a day in the sun, by the South Bay beaches, with all your scooter buddies, the first weekend of 2006!

And, this special announcement just came in: a new scooter & motorcycle tuning/repair shop is opening up in SoCal. It is called FULLERTON VINTAGE and it is owned and operated by Chris Lawrence, formerly of Vintage Scooter Service. In honor of this new venture, there will be a GRAND OPENING celebration this Saturday evening, January 7th. There will be bands, food, and drinks at the shop, which will cater to most two-wheeled vintage machines and will include an on-site dyno testing machine, set-up specifically for scooters, complete with computer reports and tuning. Also, you may have noticed the rising newsletter “circulation” numbers at the top. I have slowly been re-establishing the e-mail address list I lost earlier this year, due to computer problems, and it’s slowly reaching the numbers we used to have before. THIS MONTH’S RIDE: An “unofficial” new year’s South Bay SC tradition: meet at Claim Jumper’s restaurant (corner of Crenshaw & Lomita Blvd.’s) at 12:30pm; Ride at 1pm. From there, we will ride along the beach cities and go to the north Manhattan Beach beach parking lot, then go back to Shellback Tavern at the MB Pier.

Be sure to bring your cameras so you can snap some pics of yourself and your scooter at the beach in sunny SoCal on the first weekend of January and e-mail it back to your freezing cousins in Idaho, ha, ha!

GRAND OPENING OF “FULLERTON VINTAGE” SCOOTER TUNING/REPAIR SHOP – JANUARY 7, 2006

A new scooter & motorcycle tuning/repair shop is opening up in SoCal. It is called FULLERTON VINTAGE and it is owned and operated by Chris Lawrence, formerly of Vintage Scooter Service.

In honor of this new venture, there will be a GRAND OPENING celebration this Saturday evening, January 7th, starting at 4pm until whatever time it ends...! There will be bands, food, drinks, and tours/details about the shop, which will cater to most two-wheeled vintage machines. Capabilities of the shop will include an on-site dyno testing machine, set-up specifically for scooters, complete with computer reports and tuning..

FULLERTON VINTAGE is located at 1020 S. Raymond Avenue, Unit #S, Fullerton, CA 92831. Exit the 91 Freeway at the Raymond/East Ave. off ramp. FEB 16 - THURSDAY

7PM HAUFBRAUHAUS DINNER RIDE
Ride in a group for food and a show. Leave the Gold Spike at 7pm and ride to the Munich Style Beer Garden The Hofbrauhuas ( http://www.hofbrauhauslasvegas.com/ - 4510 Paradise Road across from the Hard Rock). Eat some fine Bavarian food and drink traditional beers at the outside beer garden where the seating capacity is over 400 people. After food and drink, we will head to a pub for more drinks and music.

9PM SUBCULT MIXER
Ride over to Famous John’s (252 Convention Center Drive) for some a mixture of various subculture music. Live bands TBA (Cost: FREE). Giveaways at door and during show.

FEB 17 - FRIDAY

11am: GOODSPINGS RIDE AND RACE
We are going to do it again, the rain did not stop us last year!! This is a 30mi(60mi r/t) non-highway ride to the Pioneer Saloon built in 1913 in Goodsprings, NV. Group ride begins from the Gold Spike and goes to Jean, NV (22mi) on Las Vegas Blvd. There will be a gas stop in Jean. From Jean to Goodsprings, NV is a straight road with a slight uphill grade for 7mi with a posted speed of 55mph with no stops and little traffic. Once at the bar, the first one to the top of the hill wins the trophy. Then relax at the Pioneer with some Free Beer from Heat Seized SC. Because of the distance and speeds the club will also provide a support vehicle to pick up any breakdowns. Plan to be back at the Spike by 4:00pm or earlier. There is limited food served at the Pioneer Saloon. See map in the events booklet for more details.

11AM: NOHO SCOOTERS POKER TOURNAMENT
NoHo Scooters presents the second annual Scooterist Poker Game at Binions Casino (128 E Fremont St) in Downtown Las Vegas. RSVPs are recommended, but not required. The casino needs an estimate of how many people are going to play. Sign up HERE (http://vegasrally.poker-signup.com) In order to keep the game friendly, this will be a low limit ($2/$4 or $4/$8) Texas Hold Em game. Binions is a short walk from the Gold Spike. The poker room is located at the rear of the casino. You can also enter the rear on Ogden St, which puts you right in the poker room. Those who want to call the day of the event for availability, please call Mike at 310-415-7042. Also note, Mike is getting married at 6PM this very night!

3pm: HAPPY HOUR

7pm: MEET, GREET, EAT and RIDE
Ground Zero meet at the Klondike Inn & Casino (5195 S. Las Vegas Blvd.) south end of the strip next to the old "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign. Grab some food and Ride at 8PM - Ready steady go! Las Vegas strip ride up and down the strip, then ending at the Cheyenne Ballroom in the Frontier Hotel (3120 S. Las Vegas Blvd.) Ride led by Heat Seized SC

10pm-5am: VEGAS SHAKEDOWN
All-Nighter at the Cheyenne Ballroom in the New Frontier Casino (3120 S. Las Vegas Blvd.). An all night dance with some of the best DJs from America and Britain spinning Brit Pop, Northern Soul and Skinhead Ska . Sponsored by the Boston Stranglers and will be FREE this year. There will be dedicated secure scooter parking behind casino. Rally packs and swag will be sold here.

1AM: SAFE RIDE
For those that need to get their scooters back safely to old downtown. Leave from Frontier Casino parking lot ride back to old Vegas for old school drinks, food, ladies, and good ole fashioned gambling see glitter gulch at it's finest! Fremont Street Experience (000-400 blocks of E. Fremont St).

FEB 18 - SATURDAY

10am-2pm: SCOOTER SHOW
Shine and show your scooter, meet others, and get to watch the judging for this year's scooter awards at Famous John's (252 Convention Center Drive). Have an early brunch and mingle (Cost: FREE). Vendors will have their wares for sale and get your official rally gear. Scooters judging will begin at 12 noon and end 1pm. FIRST OF TWO-PART RAFFLE TAKES PLACE AT 1:30. RAFFLE TICKETS GOOD ALL WEEKEND.. The 2PM Ride leave from here. See map in the events booklet for more details.

2pm: THE LARGEST SCOOTER RIDE IN AMERICA!
Leaving from Famous John's, group ride will go to Hoover Dam via the back way around scenic Lake Meade (3.00 fee). For those who don't want to go to the dam a group will break off and head to the Back Stop in Boulder City. Everyone else will head for the dam. Upon leaving the dam, scooterists will meet back up with the rest of the group at the bar and head back to the Las Vegas at 4PM as a group. Led by Heat Seized SC and support vehicle run by ClaussStudios.com. See map in the events booklet for more details.

5pm: RETURN
back to lost wages, take some time to check out the sites and have some dinner on your own.
***Slots-o-fun (across from the Riviera) has a 99 cent food and beer menu!***

8pm-2am+: VEGAS SCOOT DO
At the Aruba Hotel (2535 S. Las Vegas Blvd.). Featuring 2 live bands and 8 DJ competing to get the dance floor packed (Cost: $15). Bands TBA.

FEB 19 - SUNDAY

12 NOON: FAMOUS RED ROCK RIDE
Meet at Bonanza Gift Center (2460 S. Las Vegas Blvd. at Sahara) Leisure Ride and Red Rock Canyon - scoot through desert canyons and scenic parts of the outskirts of Las Vegas, then head to Red Rock Canyon (cost: 3.00). Ride will be led by Heat Seized SC. See map in the events booklet for more details.

3PM: LUNCH AND SCOOTER SHENANIGANS
Meet back up at Skinny Duggans Pub (4127 W. Charleson Blvd.) for a BBQ (event cost: Free). BBQ lunch (Cost: $7.00) 3pm-4pm, full kitchen after 4pm. This DJed event includes Gymkana sponsored by WCLW, HUGE raffle sponsored by Scoot Quarterly, and both the Vegas Rally and the National Scooter Awards sponsored by Upstarts SC. This is for slow bikes ONLY. If your scooter can go over 50mph, or is less than 20 years old, it’s probably too fast! We will be doing speeds of 30-35mph tops, so this is a rally for the scooters who normally can"t keep up in regular rallies.

We will be meeting at 12noon at the Claim Jumper restaurant in Torrance, CA (at the intersection of Lomita and Crenshaw Blvd.s). Ride leaves promptly at 1pm.

Route will be the fabulous Swerve N Curve PV Peninsula full circle route. Afterwards, we will eat & drink in the Claim Jumper bar to our hearts' content.

Background: After trying to find information online to try to figure out my 1958 Rumi Formichino scooter (which won “Best Vintage Scooter” at Orange Crush 8, Birdie), I gave up!!! There was absolutely NO helpful info online, or practically anywhere else, for that matter. Luckily, I joined the Moto Rumi Club, based in England, which provided a ton of info about my little scooter. Now, to help out other Formichino owners, and for curious scooter enthusiasts, I have started constructing my “Little Rumi Formichino website” that will ultimately have quite a bit of info about the maintenance, parts, history etc., of this great scoot.
